What pro rata means

A pro rata salary is the full-time salary scaled down to the hours or days you actually work. If a full-time role pays $90,000 for 38 hours and you work 22.8 hours (three days), you're on 0.6 FTE and earn $54,000.

The formula is simple: full-time salary × your hours ÷ full-time hours.

Hours or days?

Use hours if your days are different lengths. A "3 day" job with 8-hour days is 24 hours, which is 0.63 FTE on a 38-hour week, not 0.6. Use days when your days are the same length as a full-time day.

What else is pro rata?

  • Leave. Part-time employees build up annual and personal leave in proportion to their ordinary hours.
  • Super. Your employer pays 12% of what you actually earn.
  • Tax. Tax isn't pro rata. Because the first $18,200 is tax-free, part-time workers usually pay a lower average rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is 0.8 FTE on a $100,000 salary?

0.8 FTE is four days a week, or 30.4 hours on a 38-hour week. On a $100,000 full-time salary you'd earn $80,000 a year.

How do I calculate a pro rata salary for part of a year?

Divide the yearly salary by 365 and multiply by the days you were employed. For example, $90,000 for 120 days is about $29,600.

Do part-timers get paid public holidays?

Yes, if the public holiday falls on a day they'd normally work. They don't get a day in lieu for public holidays on their days off, unless their award or agreement says so.
