What a payslip must include

Under the Fair Work Act, employers must give every employee a payslip within one working day of payday, on paper or electronically. It must show:

  • The employer's name and ABN, and the employee's name.
  • The pay period and the date of payment.
  • The gross and net amounts paid.
  • For hourly workers, the ordinary hourly rate, the hours worked at that rate, and the amount paid.
  • Any loadings, allowances, bonuses, penalty rates or other separately identifiable payments.
  • Any deductions, with the name and account details of where they were paid.
  • Super contributions, including the amount and the fund they were paid to.

Fair Work's own pay slip templates are another good option. Most small businesses eventually use payroll software, which also handles Single Touch Payroll reporting to the ATO.

Payday Super

From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super at the same time as wages, and it has to reach the employee's fund within seven days. Showing the super amount on each payslip helps employees check it's been paid.

This template is a record-keeping aid for real employers and employees. Use accurate details only. Creating a false payslip, for example to support a loan application, is fraud.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give casual employees payslips?

Yes. Every employee, full-time, part-time or casual, must get a payslip within one working day of being paid.

Does this report to the ATO?

No. This template only creates a payslip. Employers must also report pay, tax and super to the ATO through Single Touch Payroll.

How is the tax worked out?

The tax withheld uses the ATO's Schedule 1 formulas for weekly, fortnightly or monthly pay, based on the length of the pay period you enter.
