Salary packaging for health and charity workers
Employees of public and not-for-profit hospitals, public benevolent institutions (PBIs) and health promotion charities can be paid part of their salary as tax-free fringe benefits. Their employers are exempt from fringe benefits tax up to a cap, so the benefit costs nobody any tax.
- Hospitals: up to $9,010 a year (a grossed-up value of $17,000).
- PBIs and health promotion charities: up to $15,900 a year (a grossed-up value of $30,000).
- Meal entertainment and venue hire: a separate extra cap of up to $2,650 a year.
The FBT year runs from 1 April to 31 March, so packaging limits reset each April.
What you can package
Usually rent or mortgage repayments, credit card or personal loan repayments, school fees and everyday bills, paid from the packaged amount by your packaging provider. Some employers also let you package a novated lease, a laptop or extra super.
Who benefits most
Anyone paying 30% tax or more. Because packaged amounts reduce your taxable income, the saving is roughly your marginal rate plus Medicare on the packaged amount. On a $75,000 salary, packaging the full $15,900 is worth about $5,200 a year.
Reportable fringe benefits count towards HECS-HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, child support and Centrelink payments. Check with your packaging provider before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How much does salary packaging save a nurse?
Public hospital employees can package up to $9,010 a year. On a $90,000 salary that's worth about $2,900 a year in extra take-home pay, plus up to about $850 more from meal entertainment.
Does salary packaging affect my tax return?
Your taxable income is lower, and your grossed-up reportable fringe benefits are shown on your income statement. They aren't taxed, but they're used for HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge and some offsets.
Can I package if I work for a private hospital?
Not the same tax-free amounts. The FBT exemptions only apply to public and not-for-profit hospitals, PBIs and health promotion charities.
