How the ATO works out tax withheld

Employers use the ATO's Schedule 1 statement of formulas, or the tax tables made from it, to decide how much tax to take from each pay. The formula is a × weekly earnings − b, with different coefficients for each income band. This calculator uses the coefficients that apply to payments made from 1 July 2026, which reflect the cut in the lowest tax rate to 15%.

  • Weekly: earnings (ignoring cents) plus 99 cents go into the formula, and the result is rounded to the nearest dollar.
  • Fortnightly: the fortnightly pay is halved, the weekly amount worked out, then doubled.
  • Monthly: the monthly pay is multiplied by 3 and divided by 13 to get a weekly figure, and the result is converted back the same way.

The amounts include the 2% Medicare levy. Full weekly, fortnightly and monthly tables are on our tax tables pages.

The tax-free threshold

The first $18,200 of income each year is tax-free for Australian residents. You should claim it from your main employer only. If you have two jobs and claim it from both, too little tax is withheld and you'll get a bill at tax time.

Study loan withholding

If you tell your employer you have a HELP or other study loan, they withhold extra using Schedule 8. This calculator estimates that from the yearly repayment on your annualised pay, so it can differ from your payslip by a few dollars.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax is withheld from $1,000 a week?

With the tax-free threshold claimed, $138 a week is withheld from 1 July 2026. Without it, $249 is withheld.

Why is more tax taken from my second job?

Your second employer uses the 'no tax-free threshold' scale, which taxes every dollar. That's because your tax-free threshold is already used by your main job.

Do the amounts include Medicare?

Yes. The ATO's withholding formulas include the 2% Medicare levy, so no extra amount is taken for it.
